RE-IMAGINING LABOR AND DELIVERY FACILITIES IN HOSPITALS
This labor and delivery hospital wing has been redesigned with the woman’s needs in mind. Modern mothers are wanting more natural birth experiences. There are many popular fads going around where women are having at-home and underwater births. This is unsafe especially if complications arise and cannot get to the hospital fast enough. These re-imagined labor and delivery rooms create a safe environment that feels less like a sterile hospital and more like a home. These hospital rooms provide better comfort for the mother when laboring and delivering as well as the family.
This design is backed by research, specialist interviews, and discussions with mothers. These rooms are to empower women and help ease stress and pain. Women have many different preferences when it comes to their bodies and what labor and delivery experience they want. This may include bathtubs, doulas, midwives, c-sections, epidurals, unmedicated, and different birthing positions. There also are many complications that might arise so having this design versatile is essential.
The sketching process shows how Kenley analyzed placement and orientation within the building. This helped her to determine the correct layout that would flow best for the floor plan.
This facility has ten labor and delivery rooms with one being ADA-compliant. It was important for this design to have an operating room just down the hall if any complications happen. The nurse's station is central to the rooms for quick and easy access to patients. There also is an office for a financial advisor if needed as well as rooms for private triage rooms right as the women come in just in case there is sexual abuse. This floor plan is an ideal layout for hospitals. Each room has a large more comfortable and adjustable bed, adjustable lighting, sofa, recliner, and storage for all medical equipment. Each bathroom has a tub to labor in, personal storage, a walk-in shower, a privacy curtain, and storage for all medical equipment.

THE WILLOWS RESIDENCE
The design for this project was inspired by laid back California home style with a vintage flare. The layout was designed with the family in mind to bring ease into their home. All the elements in this design work together to create this beautiful balance from room to room. Windows are a focal point of this design from the exterior and the interior. Unique details go a long way in this home design. Adding gold accents, a statement chandelier, and simple details like the interesting ceiling and oversized island bar. The overall vision for this design was texture on texture and neutral colors.
The sketch (shown in image 1) was the vision for the house's exterior. A large weeping willow tree in the front was necessary because of its inspiring qualities and quickly became the name-sake of the project.
The main floor features a large open living room and entry. The kitchen has stunning windows with an oversized kitchen island. The dining room is a little more private with large windows. This floor also has an office, laundry room, main bedroom, and main bathroom.
The upper floor has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was important to this design to have a second laundry room upstairs so laundry did not need to be carried up and down stairs. There is a walkway running through the middle and is open to below on both sides to open things up more.
The exterior rendering, floor plans, sections, & elevations were all created in Revit.
